How to use a Dry Brush to Benefit Your Skin, Circulation and Energy

There is a large contingent of people who are dedicated to dry brushing as part of their wellness practice. Despite the fact that there are no formal studies that prove specific health or detoxifying benefits of dry brushing, most experts agree you definitely can experience some positive results from this practice.

BENEFITS OF DRY BRUSHING

Most experts agree you can expect the following from a dry brushing session:

Skin Exfoliation – Dry brushing is an effective method of unclogging pores by removing dry skin from the body. The bristles brush away rough, dead skin cells revealing the softer, smoother skin beneath.

Enhanced Energy and Relaxation – Those two things don’t sound like they should go together, but in this case, they do! Dry brushing is a massage for the skin and can stimulate your nervous system causing you to feel relaxed. At the same time, increasing circulation can make one feel refreshed and more energized.

Detoxification – Again, there are no studies that prove that dry brushing is an effective form of lymphatic drainage for detoxifying the body, but some experts believe the following:

The lymphatic system is a network of organs and vessels that helps rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted material. The lymphatic system also helps fight infection and supports the immune system. One way believed to help support the lymphatic system is through a lymphatic drainage massage. Dry brushing is a form of massage that uses a brush to help stimulate the flow of lymph fluid.

Additionally, some believe that the newly opened pores from the exfoliating effects of dry brushing will allow the body to sweat more, releasing more toxins that way.

Although some people want to believe that dry brushing will help reduce cellulite, most experts believe the practice will only serve to temporarily plump the area due to increased circulation for a smoother appearance, but, it will not actually reduce cellulite.

HOW TO USE A DRY BRUSH

To use a dry brush, start at your feet and work your way up. Use gentle strokes, and always brush in the direction of the heart. On your limbs, use sweeping movements. You do not need to cover the same area with more than 2 strokes. On the back and torso, you can use circular motions. Be sure to cover all the main areas of the body, including the back, arms, and neck while avoiding areas with very thin or sensitive skin.

Tips for getting the most out of your dry brushing routine:

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your dry brushing routine:

    1. Dry brush dry skin daily, before you take your shower (unless you have very sensitive skin in which case dial it back to once every 1-2 weeks). When you are done, shower to rinse away all the exfoliated dead skin cells. After you shower, pat dry and use moisturizer or oil to help keep skin hydrated.
    2. Start with a light brush stroke on thinner skin and increase the pressure for thicker skin (like the soles of your feet). The idea is to not apply too much pressure, but to merely stimulate the lymphatic system and lightly exfoliate the skin. If you leave red brush marks or it hurts, you are pressing too hard or staying in the same areas too long.
    3. Always brush in the direction of your heart to encourage lymphatic drainage starting with your feet and working your way up.
    4. Drink plenty of water after dry brushing to help flush out toxins.
    5. You can dry brush your face, but other options are probably better such as a Gua Sha tool or Jade roller, especially if you have sensitive facial skin.
    6. Clean your dry brush 1-2x per month with baby shampoo to remove dead skin cells that have collected on the brush. Let it dry in the sun to avoid mildew.
    7. Never dry brush skin that is very sensitive, broken, infected, has wounds, psoriasis, or rashes.
