You’ve probably seen a million blogs and videos and had many conversations with your friends about weight loss… What’s the right way to do it and what’s the wrong way to do it. So let me first start with a little secret that you may not be thinking about. There is no one size fits all with weight loss. It’s going to be different for everyone and it’s going to be dependent on a lot of factors.
There is this faulty thinking that we envision weight loss to be something within a vacuum, calories in versus energy out. And although that’s part of it, it’s not the whole story. So let me briefly get into why I became a dietitian as a child. I was obese. I was sent to go see a dietitian who had never had a weight problem and who had no issues whatsoever with eating from what I could see, and I kind of shut down in that moment. I felt that this person did not understand me.
Because of this disconnect, I wasn’t going to listen to her. She could have been a great dietitian with great advice, but I didn’t feel that she had it within her to understand what I was going through and why I was eating the way I was. Clearly, I wasn’t eating to fuel myself. I had many reasons, but they extended far beyond hunger. And this issue drove me to want to solve it for myself and eventually help others who shared the same issue. So, I got into this industry and I’ve been in it now for over 20 years counseling patients.
Let me share that the one question I get more than anything else is, “What’s the best diet out there? Which one’s going to work?” The #1 best diet out there is going to be one that fits within your goals. And we all have different goals. Weight loss could be one of them. Better cognitive health and more energy could be others. And #2: The one that is most sustainable. If you want to do a ketogenic diet, that’s great. But if you can’t do it past three weeks despite your weight loss, it’s not the diet for you.
Furthermore, there could be something in your genetics that make a ketogenic diet simply not work. You might not get into ketosis as easily as some other people. So, in the next couple of videos, I will be presenting some ways to look at weight loss and not just weight loss, but weight loss maintenance.
They’re not going to give you the golden egg of what to do for you specifically. You’ll have to meet with a dietician or physician or another health expert that can really follow you. But I can give you some tips on how to start the process. It’s hard to lose weight. I know that firsthand, but it’s even harder to keep it off.
